AFRICAN SERVICE AND COMMUNION
MORLAND VILLAGE HALL
SUNDAY 16th NOV.
Some eighty members of the congregation of St Lawrence’s Church, Morland
met in the Village Hall for a special African Communion Service led by the Rector,
Simon Rudkin, followed by an African Lunch. The service was organized to publicise and raise funds for
St Anne’s Homes in Cape Town, South Africa .
The preacher was Lynne Tembey,
the President of the Mothers’ Union for the Province of York.
The exciting and lively service, which followed the South African Anglican rite,
featured a choir comprising members of the Church Choir,
Music Group and children from Morland School conducted by David Bach
and accompanied by Christine Rudkin who also gave an address to the children.
The hymns were mainly African in origin some of them sung in the original Xhosa language
such as ‘Mayenziwe’, which is based on the Lord’s Prayer,
‘Thuma Mina’, a hymn of discipleship and Amen ‘Siakudumisa’
They all had a strong rhythmical beat which was enhanced by the drum accompaniment
and the children’s percussion instruments which ranged from conventional tambourines
and shakers to pan lids and wooden spoons!
The service ended with the entire congregation marching round the room singing
'We are marching in the light of God' and ‘Amen Alleluia’.

After the service there was a delicious African lunch of lamb bredie- a spicy stew with apricots,
a vegetable bredie and dahl served with bread.
This was followed by a rather more English apple crumble!
The food was prepared and served by Cathleen Lyall, Sandy Pearl,
Ann Evans, Jenny Jones, Judith Lightburn and Jean Scott with help from other church members.
There was a display of African artefacts and a sales-table which featured bags
and small trinkets which had come from South Africa
Morland has established a direct link with the Homes as an outreach project
in response to the current Survival to Revival programme in the Carlisle Diocese.
Judith Lightburn, who has visited St Anne’s,
explained that they provide a safe temporary home for destitute women and their children.
They try to keep mother and child together and provide bed, food
and crèche facilities for an initial six months.
During that time the mother has to help to run the home by undertaking chores
and is encouraged to learn some skills.
She is then encouraged to seek work and to look for her own accommodation
knowing that her child is safe in the crèche.
Judith said that although the homes were spotlessly clean
and had loving and helpful staff, they were very basic and lacking in toys
and had only a very small collection of well- thumbed books.
It is hoped that the money raised will help to provide things for the children
and that future events will be held to provide further funds.
