APPLEBY HORSE FAIR 2008
Thursday 5th - 12th June
The fair got off to a great start on
the Thursday
with good weather
The early starters quickly adopted the usual activites
about the town
With good weather forecast
many were intent on having a good time ....
.... and not just the under 21's !!!
The Grapes attracted a good selection
of travellers too
Access to the main road by traffic
was restricted during most of the weekend to allow horses, travellers and pedestrians
more space
and access to the river for the washing
of the horses
providing a spectacle for visitors and
a good deal of fun too for the participants!
While some ponies loved the water and
others were a little reluctant ....
others were quite stubborn and powerful
too!
Down by the river it was slightly cooler and people watched from the
banks or paddled in the river
.. and whether down by the river or upon the hill
in Rain or Shine.... YOU need a HAT!!
Up on the hill Mass was being said by the Bishop of Lancaster
It was attended by travellers of all ages, some received the sacrament
from Fr Patrick ODonnoghue
Bishop of Lancaster
while others received a blessing
It was a well appreciated occasion organised by Anne Casey and Margaret
Doran from London
The band was an integral part of the service
Some of the well know faces to be seen
at the fair this year
IF.......YOU werent able to be there or want to catch up with the current
travelling scene in Appleby then .....
