The Right Revd James Newcome

Officer for Evangelism

Rural Dean of Carlisle
Revd John Libby

Diocesan Youth Officer

together with local co-ordinating teams
and a host of people from
the congregations of the Appleby Deanery

On Thursday 17th April
at
Crosby Ravensworth Village Hall
The Bishop talked about some of the factors
which had influenced the direction of his life.
Following refreshments and informal chat

a sing song enjoyed by everyone.

In the picture and enjoying the music are
John Reeves, The Revd Simon Rudkin,
The Bishop of Penrith with David Bach (violin)
and accompanist Hazel Bird.

Following the illuminating talk
there was time for local people to meet the bishop informally

LATER
at 7.30am on the same day the bishop was subjected to
HOT POTATOES
in the form of spontaneous questions
posed by members of the audience ....

.... at Bolton Village Hall.

Among the packed hall was
Jakob and Henny Veldman from Holland
friends of Barbara and Philip Davies.

AMONG
the many searching questions put to the bishop were ....

What does the Bishop of Penrith actually do?
Do you ever question your christian faith?
Will we get the answers to all our questions when we die?
What are your views about near death experiences?
What would be your estimate of the state of the C of E in 20 years time?
Do you really need to go to church to be a christian?
Does the mystery part of religion put younger people off going to church?
What are your views about the writer Allan Bennett?
Do we really need bishops in the church?
What do you think about latent christians?
What are your thoughts about heaven and hell?
How will God greet people who have had NO opportunities to become christians?
and
Henny Veldman (above) the visitor from holland
explained that she had a vivid sense of the presence of God
when out in the countryside and surrounded by Gods creation.
