BOLTON 'WET' FIELD DAY 2008
Saturday 21st June

The parade started at the school
and was led by a combined Samba Band from Penrith and Millom

The queen and attendants were eagerly awaited by friends and people from the village

The combined band took a prominent place on the field ...

... and brightened up a damp and dull day with their considerable skill and enthusiasm
Congratulations to the BLUE JAM and MILLOM Samba Bands

There was a good number of people
at the start of the event

... to see the new queen crowned

... watched by those waiting to take part in the fancy dress and take part in the races

and a special DRAGON Race ...

... won by ........... THE WINNERS!!

Coconut WINNERS!!!!

Cold and WET .... but still its an opportunity to....
BE PAINTED UP ...

... or wear a nice hat!!

Wet or dry.. the field day committee put lots of time in to organise the event.
They were rewarded with a great turnout. People stayed and enjoyed the day
until eventually they returned home cold and wet!!

But Bolton has a lot to consider....
with the closure of the local post office on July 31st
the Parish Clerk attended the Field Day
providing an opportunity
for people to consider the facilities they require in the village

As the poster says - Local Services are under threat!!

The Parish Clerk
writes....

In short, we lost the campaign to avoid closing our Post Office
and on 18th June we were advised that the facility would close on 31st July.
The shop then becomes unviable and will close sometime later -
once John Cotter has had chance to work out his closure plans.

The stand yesterday was to try to find out from the community
"What to do next".
The Parish Council sees the closure as an opportunity now to launch other community support ideas -
an opportunity that would not have occurred had John Cotter simply retired.

We have been looking at how other communities have coped when they lost services -
be it pub, shop or post office - and have particularly looked at the Northern Fells Group and the Crosthwaite Exchange.

The Northern Fells group supports 7 parishes around Caldbeck
and the Crosthwaite Exchange serves only one community in South Lakes.
Each provides a focus for especially the elderly and those unable to travel easily from their homes.
Services include provision of lunch clubs, coffee mornings, food co-ops, Tai Chi, minibus, lend a hand, book clubs -
and anything that the community sees as a shared need.
Funding comes from various sources and at present both seem to be sustainable in the longer term.

Bolton has already received funding and other support from the Eden Local Strategic partnership -
£4,000 plus direct input and help from the partner agencies.

Our quest now is to try to decide what the community wants and will support
and how and where we can do it.
