Dancers in oils by local art student Annie Bedford

Annie Bedford

is a promising artist,
a past pupil of Langwathby Primary school and has deveolped a great passion for art and the visual environment. Bob Bedford (Father, Teacher and Artist) says that she had a great flair for art even at an early age. 'She always showd a great interest in colour and shape and was positively encouraged at her primary school. At that time in particular learning was enhanced through experimentation and she responded to this approach extremely well.'

Annie says
that in addition to her natural interest, she was fortunate in having brilliant teachers at Ullswater Community College and a very good art department.

With her obvious talent, industrious nature
and dedicated help from her teachers she achieved A* in Art and Full Marks for her Dancers (see photograph) at A level.

Annie is taking a GAP year at the monment
and has spent valuable time studying art and sightseeing in many places ... Budapest, Prague, France and Barcellona all figure in her travels
as well as visiting the Mayan Art in Mexico.

In September she will study the History of Art at Leeds University which also contains a module in practical art which she is so looking forward to.

Annie views the next three years as a great challenge
and hopes that it will lead to a long career in the world of art in the future.

There is no doubt
that a great many people who have seen her work
will be looking forward to seeing many more works of heart
in the future! Perhaps she will become a regular exhibitor

Art Mart Sales Soar As The temperature Rises

Over 1000 people attended this year’s Art Mart, an annual sale and exhibition of art from Cumbrian artists. As the temperature soared, so did the sales, with art work being purchased by visitors from as far afield as Florida, London, Gwent, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Yorkshire as well as from Cumbria. There is no doubt that there was something of interest for everyone who visited as artwork was for sale at prices ranges in the region of £18 to £700

Held in Langwathby Primary School in the heart of rural Eden, its success is achieved thanks to the determination and enthusiasm of parents, teachers and friends of the school who continue to be committed to making a success of this well established and very colourful weekend.

Headteacher Lesley Birtwell said: 'Yet again, we had an incredible Art Mart. Each year during the second Saturday in July the school disappears and in its place an Art Gallery is created thanks to an enormous amount of work behind the scenes from an army of willing helpers.

This tenth year was obviously a huge achievement for all those who have been involved over the years. I’d like to thank everyone who has played any part in making Art Mart the huge success it is. It has brought a great deal of pleasure to many people, as the purchaser from Florida said: “I just had to buy the beautiful cottage by Nick Binney – it’s a beautiful reminder of this place.”

Eighty eight Cumbrian artists, both professional; and amateur, had their work on sale this year. Godfrey Tonks, a professional artist, who has exhibited at the Medici Gallery in London, has also exhibited at Art Mart over the last ten years.

Godfrey said: In 1996 when the first Art Mart was launched I was delighted to be invited to participate. Little did I know that ten years hence, this enterprising venture would not only be flourishing and raising considerable sums for Langwathby school but also making a significant contribution to the cultural life of the Eden Valley. Great credit is due to all those involved, who for one weekend each year, transform a village school into a sophisticated art gallery.

For more information about ART MART and how to exhibit your own work or help with the project please contact Lesley Birtwell, Head of Langwathby School, Tel 01768 881295
