GO FISHING!!

Two of the UK’s Best Anglers to Make Appearances at Lowther 2005
Anyone entering the Fishing Competition at this
year’s Lowther Horse Driving and Country Fair Show,
will get a priceless opportunity to brush-up on their casting and angling skills
when Hywell Morgan,
Casting World Champion and 6-time British Casting Champion,
and Eoin Fairgrieve, a Professional Angling Instructor,
carry out a fishing demonstration on the Lowther Fishing Island.
The Famous Lowther Fishing Event
will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of August
at the Lowther Fishing Island and offers the chance for anglers of all abilities
to shine
in a number of categories, including juniors, seniors and wheelchair users,
so competitors are advised to watch Hywell and Eoin’s demonstration carefully
if they want to pick up some match-winning pro-tips from the world’s best.
Hywell is the son of Welsh fishing
guru Moc Morgan,
and has amassed an array of casting titles including:
World Games Accuracy Casting Champion and European Distance Casting Champion.
TV viewers may already know
about Hywell
since he has been presenting programmes about fishing for Welsh TV channel S4C
for a few years.
He has also made appearances on 'Record Breakers',
the 'Big Breakfast'
and has been a guest on Sky TV's 'Tight Lines'.
Eoin Fairgrieve
is a fully qualified casting member of the Advanced Professional Game Angling
Instructors (APGAI)
as well as holder of the Salmon and Trout Association’s National Instructor's
Certificate.
Eoin is regarded as one of the UK’s finest exponents of the art of Spey-casting
and represents Swedish tackle manufacturer Loop in UK.
Eoin is one of the youngest
ever instructors to qualify in both the APGAI trout and salmon disciplines
and has a great interest in getting people involved in Angling at an early age.
He has already established a casting centre of excellence in the Borders,
and he has also been appointed
as Angling Development Officer for the River Tweed.
Organisers of the array of fishing
events at Lowther this year
have focused their attention specifically on making Angling attractive
to the younger generation,
who hopefully will be inspired by Hywell and Eoin’s enthusiasm
for Britain’s most popular sporting pastime.
“We hope very much that
the events at Lowther
will encourage young people to become interested in fishing
and encourage them to get involved in conservation.
There will be a variety of activities for children and young people of all ages
put on by several organisations including the Environment Agency
and the Eden Rivers Trust, and a number of professional Angling instructors.
We hope that any Anglers attending the events will bring their whole family
along
to get involved in fishing and conservation,” said event organiser, Tom
Clifford.
SHOW JUMPING
![]() |
This year Show Jumping
will return to Lowther in the afternoon of Saturday 6th,
after making a spectacular debut at last year’s show,
when 30 of the UK’s top jumpers competed in the £3,000 prize event.
Organisers are expecting to attract a top quality field of competitors once
again for the Saturday.
Back by popular demand this year is Lorenzo
“The Flying Frenchman”.
The dashing French daredevil was a big hit in past Lowther Shows
and will be back to thrill the crowds once again with his ability to ride several
horses at a time
at break-neck speed in his own inimitable style.
CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORLAND WRESTLING
The ancient skills of Cumberland
and Westmorland Wrestling
have long been associated with Agricultural Shows
and Lakeland Sports events throughout Cumbria. Fans of the 200-year-old wrestling
style
will be able to enjoy the display of hipes and swings, hanks, inside-clicks
and the all the rest once again at this year’s show.
ESSEX DOG TEAM
Brand new to this year’s
show are the Essex Dog Display Team.
The team is the only civilian dog display team to ever appear in the Royal Tournament,
and are regulars at Crufts and will be a sure-fire hit at Lowther this year.
MASSAI WARRIORS
This year promises to be the
most colourful yet
as a group of Maasai Warriors are due to jet in from the Serengeti
to sharpen up proceedings with their rousing spear-toting dance routines.
The Maasai Warrior Troupe returns to England
after a short tour last year in which they thrilled and excited all who watched
them.
The Maasai live in an area around Kiserian, about 25 miles from Nairobi in Kenya,
where they live a very hard and simple life, graze their cattle
and goats in areas of drought where fresh water is scarce,
education basic and infant mortality is high.
The dance troupe's eerie chanting of their songs
make their performance enchanting and captivating.
Their leader, Nicholas Sironka,
himself a distinguished artist, will narrate every performance,
giving the audience a fascinating insight to these spiritual people.
Their fascination will increase when they are asked to join in!
Of the ten performers, two have never left their village before
and their wide-eyed astonishment on seeing the thousands who will watch them
should be a joy to behold!
Apart from their performances, they will be able to talk to the public,
whilst showing off their hand-made crafts and wares, which will be available
for purchase.
A spectator who watched them in Kenya says of them,
"The warrior troupe came out to be introduced and their smiling friendly
faces
and gentle manners belie their formidable warrior reputation.
They may be a dancing troupe for now,
but on another day these guys are just as capable of tackling a lion- their
traditional foe that eats their livestock.
The rehearsal started and I felt the hairs rise on the back of my neck,
powerful and beautiful movements combined with the eerie chanting of their songs."
THE WATERLOO BAND
Music of a more traditional style will be provided by The King’s Division
Waterloo Band.
In addition, the North West Fire Brigades’ Firestorm Parachute Display
Team
will also be ‘dropping in’ to the main arena to show off their daring
skills.
THE HALF MARATHON
![]() |
And of course Lowther just wouldn’t
be the same
without the return of regular favourites such as the 22nd Lowther half marathon,
hound show, terrier show, Lurcher Show, clay pigeon shooting and fishing competition,
as well as mini-beast hunting on the River Lowther.
The record crowds that attended
last year’s event have ensured
that the Lowther Shopping Village has increased in size to cope with demand.
Around 350 shopping stands will make up the shopping village,
which include the famous Cumbrian Food Hall, Made in Cumbria and Rural Craft
marquees,
selling just about everything under the sun throughout all three days.
And for those people who would like to shop without interference from their
children
a children’s activity area has been organised by Jumping Jacks and Cumbria
County Council.
