Rushbearing

Many centuries ago, when people were buried within the church walls, the floor was covered with rushes, which were changed regularly. In more recent times, when church floors were paved with stone flags, the rushes were no longer needed, so to commemorate time past, annual Rushbearing ceremonies were held in several Cumbrian Churches.

They used to last two days. On the first day the church was cleaned and on the next day there were festal morning and evening services. Parades were held and after the services, sports, a feast and then dancing. The Warcop Sports were famous throughout the counties.

At Warcop the church ceremony centres on the ‘cycle of life’. Over time and as years go by, the young people replace the elders in the community. As we are told, death takes Christians, through Christ’s mercy, to heaven. The St. Peter Day Collect says, ‘Make, we beseech thee, all Bishops and Pastors diligently to preach Thy holy word, and the people obediently to follow the same, that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory.

So today our young people bring their crosses and crowns to the altar for a blessing.
