EXCITING NEW YOUTH PROJECT
ANNOUNCED FOR UPPER EDEN
£325,000 Youth Project Launched in Upper Eden
Local church leaders recently released details of an exciting new youth project
designed to meet the needs of young
people living in the Upper Eden area.
The project will begin with the appointment of two full-time
schools and church youth workers in September 2007
and extend, initially, over a period of five years. One worker will be based
in Appleby, and the other in Kirkby Stephen.
The intention is that, together, they will build a team of volunteers and “gappers”
to assist them in youth work provision across the region.
The project consists of a number of partners, the main ones
being the Methodist and Anglican churches, NISCU (Christian Schools’ work
organisation well-established in the region),
Chofhs (a Brough-based youth group) and The Joseph Rank Trust.
Rev’d Phil Dew, Methodist Church Minister, said “Many
local churches are already actively engaged in youth work
– in Kirkby Thore, Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Tebay and other villages, and
in the two local secondary schools
(Appleby Grammar School and Kirkby Stephen Grammar School Sports College)
and the aim will be to develop and extend that work in radical and innovative
ways.”
Rev’d Brian Magorrian, Church of England Minister said
“The project represents a significant financial investment
– well in excess of £325,000- on the part of the local churches
and their funding partners,
and includes a grant of £160,000 from the Joseph Rank Trust.”
Chris Dunning, Director of Youth Projects for the Rank Foundation,
said that the Upper Eden project is very important nationally, because it demonstrates
the role that churches,
working together collaboratively, can play in responding to the particular needs
of young people living in rural communities.
